FAQs
What is ‘Ready to Burn’ wood?
Ready to burn wood is firewood that has a moisture content below 20%. When firewood moisture levels are below 20% it is ready to use as wood fuel. Using wood with an assured low moisture content means it will burn 80% more effectively than wet wood and reduce the level of emissions.
Why shouldn’t I burn wet wood?
Other than the downside of not being able to start a fire and get a blaze going, wet wood also releases nasty emissions into the atmosphere including soot, tar, and creosote when burning. These compounds can cause damage to wood-burning appliances as the sooty residue can clog the flute.
How do you know if the wood is too wet to burn?
You can tell if firewood is too wet to burn when it fails to light or burn at all. It may also produce more smoke than usual. Wet firewood can also have moisture visible under the bark and feel wet to touch.
